I have Parkinson's Disease... but it doesn't have me.

10-11-12. That was the date that changed my life. It was the day that the first of seven neurologists confirmed my diagnosis at only 48 years old. I had Parkinson's disease.

I thought my life was over. Here I was, a happily married father of three great kids and now I was going to be a burden. An invalid. Useless.

But what I've learned over the last few years about this disease is that I can live a normal lifespan, and those can be good years. A lot of my disease pattern is within my control, and there are things that YOU can do too if you've been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Or maybe you're a caregiver, friend or loved one of someone who has Parkinson's. This book is also for you because you can be a fantastic advocate for the patient. There is so much to learn, and I've packed everything I know about this disease into this book.

You'll learn about

* Parkinson's and diet and how what you eat can change your symptoms and progression
* Dealing with the fears and other emotions of Parkinson's
* Other conditions that can mimic Parkinson's disease
* Testing that you need to have done ASAP
* Questions you should ask your doctor
* Important supplements to add to your regimen
* The latest medications and high-tech testing

And lots more!

Power Over Parkinson How to Live Your Best Life Even After Your Parkinson Disease Diagnosis edition by Terry Cason Professional Technical eBooks

This book is about so much more than living with Parkinson Disease; it is about one man's journey to understand his diagnosis and who is learning to successfully manage it. It begins with pinpointing the cause of his symptoms, learning and accepting his diagnosis, and creating a life that is productive and fulfilling. In many respects it is a celebration of coping with most any tough situation in life and finding a way to move forward to create a meaningful life of love and purpose.

Throughout my 30+ career as an occupational therapist, I have worked with many individuals with Parkinson Disease. Terry's book and his story is a reminder of the human being behind the diagnosis; someone just trying to figure how to deal with something that is hard to accept but who perseveres to be the best person he can be and who is able to teach others that hearing devastating news can be the beginning of a new journey of life's lessons and an opening to a life with purpose and appreciation.

I wish more health care workers could read this book. It is a reminder of what a person feels and the process they go through to adjust and make the most of who they are and how they can make adjustments to live a fulfilling life. As clinicians, we must help our patients to manage their symptoms and the disease process, and as human beings we must approach our patients with compassion and care.

This is a first person account of noticing and igoring changes in his body, seeing numerous doctors who all agreed he had Parkinson Disease, his initial shock and denial, and his gradual acceptance. The reader learns about the disease of the Parkinson condition that will help those unfamiliar to it to be much more knowledgeable. It is well researched. Most importantly, you will hear first hand how Terry comes to accept his condition and to live a full life.

This is a message of inspiration and bravery both in terms of living his life with this condition and for sharing his message of hope.

He gives excellent practical strategies for managing the disease process, handling his emotional response, inflammation, foods/diet, lifetyle, sleep, medications, natural treatments, supplements, exercise, and support groups. As an occupational therapist, I praise his attention to home modifications, safety concerns, adaptive devices, and tips for caregivers.

This is a story well worth reading to hear about the person behind the diagnosis who makes the most of what life has dealt him.

Great item.
Very informative book. Yes! Knowledge I'd power!!!
This was very helpful to me even after 25+ years of PD"I learned a lot of interesting stuff and info'
Great read full of information. Takes a holistic view of the disease and treatment. Can't recommend enough. If you or someone you know has been (or may be) diagnosed please read this book!
Not so sure about his information. There is no bibliography or footnotes, leaves me questions his theories and where info was obtained. Some of it was spot on as far as symptoms etc. Stopped reading once I got to his dietary recommendations. Where did he obtain the info?
This book has lots of useful information from someone who has not only done tons of research, but is himself a Parkinson's patient. I bought it twice once for myself on , and then in paperback for my husband, who is the patient (but doesn't use e-books.) It has a lot of typos, but the information is convincing.
This book is an invaluable resource for everyone who has Parkinson's, lives with someone who has Parkinson's, or just wants to understand Parkinson's. It is thorough, well researched, and quite detailed.
I have two specific criticisms First, the book needed an editor who knows how to edit. There are countless instances of homonyms, misspellings, and words that just don't fit. It is a shame to allow something so ordinary to blemish such a valuable resource.
Second, I strongly non-concur with the author's recommendation for Citrucel. I accept his assertion that it is effective, but from all I could find, the consumer of Citrucel has to choose between sugar and aspartame -- both are known hazards to one's health. I place a high priority on minimal processing of what I put in my body and the best overall source of dietary fiber I've found is whole organic psyllium husk - also available on Organic India Whole Husk Psyllium, 12-Ounce I mix it with water and a bit of applesauce and it works quite well.
